Remote Junior Data Scientists and Interns?

A few days ago @DataDanaL tweeted:

That's a great question. Anyone have any thoughts on the matter?

It seems to me that the goal in hiring personnel is for them to be responsible and motivated workers. Just because they're junior or an intern doesn't remove this goal. I've personally dealt with a remote intern and it worked out fine. Also, given most junior and DS intern positions would be targeted at folks that already have a BS and are in graduate school, it self-selects towards more responsible workers.
